During the Vietnam War, in 1970, Captain Willard is given the mission to locate and eliminate a once-promising Special Forces commander who has apparently gone insane and taken refuge in the jungles of Cambodia, where he leads an army of fanatics. His journey upriver in search of Kurtz becomes increasingly dangerous and hallucinatory as Willard ventures deeper into the heart of darkness.
