- Afonso starts a new life on a tropical African island as a plantation doctor, where he must treat a group of servants “infected” with Banzo, the slaves’ nostalgia. They die by the dozens, from starvation or by taking their own lives. Fearing contagion, the group is sent to a rainy hill, surrounded by forest. There, Afonso tries to cure the servants, but his inability to understand what is in their souls proves stronger than any remedy.
